Custom built wool fleece handling rig

My experience across a range of disciplines allows me to assume technical leadership roles as I have the foundational understanding to co-ordinate the integration of complex systems

Project Overview

The automated wool handling project, funded by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) aimed to reduce the cost of fleece processing by demonstrating the feasibility of an automated system to inspect, trim and bale. The project spanned roughly two and a half years, during which i progressed from my initial role as an intern, to an employed research engineer within the Faculty of Research and IT. During the course of the project I made several key contributions, one of which was leading the mechatronics design and integration for a full scale, bespoke wool handling rig.

Contributions and Achievements

  1. lead a team of three mechatronics engineers through the design and integration of the control systems of a bespoke wool handling rig.
  2. Co-ordinated integration of control system with mechanical and computer vision sub-sections
  3. Completed successful field trial of prototype and client delivery

Key Learnings

  1. Mechatronic system design
  2. Technical team leadership
  3. Managing client expectations
